Subject Description | This subject examines Australian cultural and social histories from WWI through to the 1990s, looking at how key events and social trends (war, depression, immigration, economic development, indigenous rights, regionalism, urbanization, etc.) have shaped notions of identity and nationhood; at the intersections between private and public historical experiences, with particular reference to gender and life-stories; and at how social memories and commemorative practices (e.g. the Anzac 'tradition', race relations, sense of place, etc.) have influenced understandings of and contestations over the meanings of 'Australianness' and 'Australia'. |
Assessment | Tutorial participation (10%); Essays, class papers and assignments totalling not more than 5000 words (90%). |
