Subject Description

This subject explores the origins of anti-semitism, the impact of law codes, both civil and religious, on the Jews, the motivation of anti-Jewish activities, relations between Christians and Jews in Western Europe and the Holy Land, and the varying positions of Jews and Christians in the Muslim world. The focus is on the contribution of Jews to western medieval society, and what appeared to be the justification for the anti-semitic actions of other societies in relation to the Jews. A wide variety of primary source material exists in translation.

Assessment

Tutorial participation and written work of not more than 5000 words.
