Subject Description

This subject will explore the changing world of western Christendom and the Middle East between 1095 and 1291 the effective end of the crusading period. Why was the First Crusade so 'successful' when so many previous efforts had failed? Why was the West unable to hold on to the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem? Why did early success turn into resounding defeat? How was the West affected by its closer contact with the East? How could the 'Fighting Monks' combine the life of a monk with that of a soldier? Students will come to understand the varying positions of the East and the West during this period, look into the motives of those deciding to go on crusade, and explore the ways in which contemporary documents on both sides portray the conflict.

Assessment

Tutorial participation and written work of not more than 5000 words.
