Subject Description

The subject is designed to introduce students to the history of the great empires of the Islamic world, west of India. The subject will deal with the period between the rise of Islam in the seventh century and the decline of the Ottomon Empire. The central theme of the subject will be the question of the rise and fall of empires, the role of religion in integrating and disintegrating multi-ethnic states, and the relationship between the Islamic world and the European world, from the intellectual and cultural flowering of Islam, the Crusades, to the period of the economic and political preponderance of Europe.

Assessment

Written work of not more than 5000 words.
