Subject Description

The subject will explore the history of feminist theory and feminist movements from 1790 to 1950, in the context of economic and social change in Western, industrialising societies, including Australia. On completion of this subject students should be able to demonstrate a general knowledge of the strands of feminist theory current in the United States, Europe and Australia between 1790 and 1950; show awareness of the interrelationship of theorists' ideas and the practices of feminist activists and social reformers; appreciate the ways in which Europeans in Australia received and modified feminist ideas within their historically specific context.

Assessment

A 2500 word research essay (60%), an orally delivered class paper (10%), a 2000 word reflective essay (30%).
