Subject Description

A history of the peoples of the North European Plain and the Danube Basin, which covers the main fault line between the West and the East, between Catholic and Orthodox Christianity, between Islamic and Christian Empires, between modern progressive societies and despotic Empires, between Capitalism and Communism. This is an area where the 'Old World' remained entrenched into the Twentieth Century, and where its passing was marked by two World Wars. With the fall of Communism it remains at the centre of European crisis zones.

Assessment

One Oral Presentation and a 500 word class paper 10%; a 2,500-word research essay 45%; a 2,000 word review essay or a 2 hour exam.
