Subject Description

This subject traces, in comparative perspective, the history of Melbourne's inner-suburban ring. It studies neighbourhood life, bourgeois reform, slum clearance, and community mobilisation. The subject combines classroom instruction with applied research work. On completing this subject students should be able to demonstrate a detailed historical knowledge of Melbourne's inner-suburban ring, and a general comparative understanding of New World urbanisation during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. They should be familiar with current epistemological debate in urban studies, and be able to apply historical skills in assessing the cultural significance of elements of Melbourne's past.

Assessment

Written work totalling not more than 5,000 words, comprising a research assignment and a reflective essay.
