Subject Description

This subject traces the history of the Central Activities District from the time of first European settlement in 1835 until the present day. It explores, in comparative perspective, the social and spatial development, and the interwoven cultural constructions, of inner Melbourne. The subject will combine classroom instruction with applied research work. On completing this subject students should be able to demonstrate a detailed historical knowledge of central Melbourne, and a general comparative understanding of New World urbanisation during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. They should be familiar with current epistemological debate in urban studies, and be able to apply historical skills in assessing the cultural significance of elements of Melbourne's past.

Assessment

Written work totalling not more than 5000 words, comprising a research assignment and a reflective essay.
