Subject Description

A study of the ways in which Europeans of the Renaissance period created a self-identity which put Europe at the centre of the world; and the part which this played in the European conquest of the Americas. Students who complete this subject should: understand key elements in the emergence of a European cultural identity in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries; be familiar with the ways in which historians have understood encounters between Europeans and American Indians in this period; locate and analyse literary and visual documents which represent and shape these historical developments.

Assessment

One research essay of 2500 words (50%), one review essay of 1500 words (40%) and tutorial participation (10%).
