Subject Description

A study of twentieth century Australian history, from federation in 1901 to the present. Based on four themes relating to current key issues in Australian society, which will be studied in their historical context. They are: issues of social relationships and popular culture (e.g. gender, the family and recreation); issues of race and immigration (e.g. White Australia/multiculturalism, Aboriginal policies, land rights and Mabo); democracy and independence (e.g. Petrov, Whitlam dismissal, republicanism); and Australia's place in the world (e.g. Australia in two world wars, Vietnam, relations with Britain, U.S. and Asia).

Assessment

Class participation and contribution (10%), one class paper of 1000 words (25%), one major research essay of 3000 words (65%).
