Subject Description

In the last third of the eighteenth century, much of the western world experienced unprecedented change. Many historians are convinced that this 'Age of Revolutions' was among the key turning-points of western, even world history. Two of the most spectacular examples of such upheavals occurred on opposite sides of the Atlantic: in the thirteen British colonies along the eastern coast of North America, and in France. This subject is a comparative study of the origins and nature of the American Revolution of 1763-1776 and the French Revolution of 1789, and an examination of the extent to which they may be understood together as an 'Atlantic' revolution. It is recommended that this subject be done in conjunction with The Age of Revolutions B.

Assessment

One short exercise of 500 words (10%), one essay of 1500 words (30%), one essay of 2000 words (50%), tutorial assessment (10%).
