Subject Description

This subject covers an introduction to the Old Norse language and a survey of the history and culture of the Viking Era (c. 800-1050 AD). During the course students will consolidate and extend knowledge of the Old Norse language; have develop reading skills in Old Norse so that they can read Old Norse texts with the aid of a dictionary and will be taught to read a short saga in Old Norse (Hakonar saga g da); be able to survey Old Norse literature, with a concentration on five sagas in English translation; be introduced to the mythology of Ancient Scandinavia.

Assessment

Weekly assignments in the language; a 1-hour test in September and a 2-hour examination at the end of semester.
