Subject Description

A study of Russian writing, since the period of glasnost, centred on a core of novels, with background reading in literary theory, and the relationship between the society and its literature, theatre, cinema and visual arts. At least parts of all texts will be studied in Russian. By the end of the subject, students should be able to demonstrate: a thorough understanding of the cultural development of Russia and the Soviet Union since the period of glasnost; the ability to form critical opinions regarding the significance and value of Russian texts in a national and global context, to discuss these in a scholarly way and to communicate their knowledge to the surrounding community.

Assessment

A 3000 word essay and a 2-hour exam.
