Subject Description

This a general-survey-type subject, which gives an overview of the main developments in the cultural life of Russia during the last one thousand years.All lectures are in English (no knowledge of Russian is required). It covers: the origins and contemporary status of the Russian language; the most important writers and literary works; Russian philosophy and political thought; Russian society; Russian art, film and music; religion.

Assessment

Tutorial participation (10%), one essay of 1500 words (30%), one major research essay of 2500 words (60%).
