Five hours a week comprising three hours of language study and two hours of Special Studies

Subject Description

Expansion of language skills through language study as well as through special linguistic, textual and/or background studies. (See departmental Course and Subject Guide for details of these studies). Students will attempt to acquire a proficiency in basic idiomatic and conversational forms and be able to converse freely using these forms. They will also acquire a proficiency in written structures of moderate complexity and be able to formulate such structures clearly and accurately. They will attempt to acquire the ability to interpret messages of an intermediate level of complexity occurring in a variety of audio-visual media and in individual and group spoken forms. They will endeavour to acquire a basic knowledge of the principles of analysis in the area of the Special Studies units of their choice. They will attempt to achieve the level of language competency for admittance into Advanced German Second Year A (126-205).

Assessment

One two-hour language test, a 15 minute oral examination, written work totalling no more than 1000 words, and one three-hour written exam or equivalent (Special Studies).
