Prerequisites

Admission to 4th year Geography honours; plus at least one of 121-213/313 Plants, People and Changing Environments, 121-270/370 Biodiversity, 121-358 Australian Quaternary Environments, 121-340 Principles of Ecological Biogeography, or appropriate alternative prerequisite subjects approved by the subject coordinator.

Up to three 1 hour lectures and three hours of practical work a week (totalling no more than 39 hours of lectures and 39 hours of practical work), and up to 7 days fieldwork

Subject Description

A subject of lectures, practical work and/or directed readings. Depending on the availability of staff and the interests of students, several streams of advanced study will be offered, of which students must participate in one. These streams will normally include: ecological biogeography of plants, palynology and palaeo-environmental reconstruction, management of biological resources, ecological biogeography of aquatic ecosystems. Students who complete this subject should be able to: understand and apply a variety of research methods in their chosen area of specialisation; understand and evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the major concepts and theories in their chosen area of specialisation; organise, analyse and present research data clearly and effectively.

Assessment

Written work and/or examinations equivalent to 6000 words.
