121-213/313 Plants, People and Environment or 121-270/370 Biodiversity, or permission of subject coordinator. This subject can only be done in conjunction with, or after the completion of, 121-340 Principles of Biogeography.

Subject Description

This subject covers material on: plot and plotless field sampling procedures; multivariate procedures for vegetation data analysis including classification and ordination; laboratory procedures for the analysis of plant and soil materials; field and laboratory procedures in palaeo-ecology and palaeo-reconstruction, including pollen and charcoal analysis. Students completing the subject should be able to: design and conduct vegetation surveys as appropriate for different plant community types; use and understand a variety of sampling and analysis procedures for the description and interpretation of ecological and environmental data pertaining both to communities and populations; and use and understand methods of palaeo-ecological and palaeo-environmental reconstruction.

Assessment

Weekly laboratory exercises equivalent to 2500 words (50%), and a field project report of 2500 words (50%). Students must complete and submit the field project report and attend at least 80% of the laboratory classes to be eligible to pass this subject.
