Subject Description | The subject explores the linkages between the scientific basis of environmental degradation, and political processes which encourage the development of effective management and remediation techniques. Selected case studies are used to explore the way in which the physical, chemical and biological characteristics of the problem influence the level at which solutions must be sought, whether it be global, national or local. These case studies are in turn related to an overall discussion of mechanisms of environmental problem solving including economic and social valuation of the environment, and the principles of intergenerational equity and sustainable development. |
Assessment | Written assignments together totalling not more than 3000 words, and one 2 hour end-of-semester examination. Weighting of assessment items will be announced at the beginning of the semester. |
