Subject Description

The subject focuses on socio-spatial polarisation in Australian cities and the emergence of postmodern 'divided cities' internationally. Under three broad themes - built environment changes, labour market restructuring and issues in urban governance - it considers consumption characteristics in cities and their expression in different built forms e.g. gentrified housing; the casualisation of urban labour markets and the position of different social groups within them e.g. gender, class and ethnic groups; urban policy and urban services provision in the contemporary state. Students will gain experience in designing and undertaking some original empirical work in Melbourne that takes up some of the material discussed in the subject.

Assessment

2-hour examination (40%) plus written work of up to 3,000 words (60%).
