Subject Description

This subject will focus on a variety of authentic texts representing non-literary genres as a stimulus for discussion and conversation practice. Genres and texts will include examples of semi-technical language. Advanced exercises in translation from and into Italian will be set for the purpose of studying syntax and style in the appropriate registers. Each student will present an assessable class paper on a topic to be agreed with the lecturer. In addition to the above, a weekly special seminar will examine a selection of modern literary texts, both prose and poetry. The primary purpose of the exercise will be to see to what extent distinct registers for prose and poetry continue to exist in the modern written language. On completion of this subject, students should have acquired the ability to comprehend, analyse and interpret complex texts, both literary and non-literary, and the ability to use actively a variety of registers and styles in contemporary Italian.

Assessment

Take-home assignments; written tests (in total not more than 3 hours). End-of-semester oral test.
