Subject Description | For this subject, students must complete a 5,000-word research project in English or Italian on a topic to be approved by their supervisor and by the subject coordinator. Its purpose is to train students in carrying out a substantial piece of work in preparation for the fourth year thesis. The areas of research may be connected with the subjects offered this year, or in another area connected with the research interests of staff. The main research areas are: Italian and Romance linguistics, language teaching methodology, sociolinguistics, dialectology, medieval poetry and prose, Renaissance studies, 19th and 20th century literature, 20th century history. On completion of the project, students should have extended and deepened their knowledge of the chosen topic; sharpened their critical faculties in relation to source material and secondary literature; acquired substantial skills in planning and executing a research program on a specific topic; obtained valuable experience with a view to subsequent research projects such as the fourth year Honours, MA and PhD theses. |
Assessment | An essay of no more than 5000 words. |
Prescribed Texts | Bibliography to be discussed with supervisor. |
