Subject Description

A systematic revision and consolidation of the basic structures of the Italian language. Grammatical explanations will be integrated by regular weekly exercises, oral and written, and by a weekly conversation practice hour, so as to extend the range of vocabulary and improve fluency. Students will be introduced to a small number of contemporary literary texts in order to improve their standard of comprehension and to gain some understanding of the process of literary/cultural criticism. By the end of the academic year, students should have consolidated their knowledge of the basic structures of Italian, acquired the knowledge to compare and contrast features of English and Italian vocabulary and syntax, and acquired the ability to examine critically various aspects of postwar Italian history and culture.

Assessment

Not more than three hours of written tests. Two 1500-word essays. An oral test. Continuous assessment.
