Subject Description | The subject offers an integrated approach to the study of the Italian language and the culture of contemporary Italy. Intensive revision and further exploration of the major areas of the Italian language. The language component of the subject combines the analysis of grammatical structures, vocabulary and idiom with practical exercises designed to increase the student's linguistic competence in a variety of areas: comprehension, essay-writing, spoken Italian. By the end of the subject students should have developed their spoken, written and comprehension skills. Students are given the opportunity to participate in class and hence to improve their language skills. Students will also read a selection of novels and short stories, representative of the major trends in modern Italian writing. Reading contemporary Italian texts is seen both as a means of improving comprehension of written Italian and of introducing students to the fundamental concepts of narrative. Through guided readings of short stories students will develop practical techniques for the analysis of literary texts. |
