Subject Description

This subject will examine the development of contemporary film theory post-1968. Critical issues will be explored regarding the applicability of various theoretical approaches. Students will be expected to critically evaluate the significance and applicability of some of the following theoretical approaches which have dominated in the 1970s, 80s and 90s: structuralism; apparatus theory; feminist film theory and spectatorship; Freudian and Lacanian psychoanalytic theory; postmodernism; queer theory; postcolonial theory; and theories of modernity and the avant-garde.

Assessment

Written work will comprise one class paper and one essay totalling about 6000 words.
