Subject Description

A study of 18th-century neo-classicism in the age of revolutions. Through history, fine arts, music and literature (English, French, German, modern Greek, and Italian), the appeal to antiquity is contextualised, and emergent ideals such as liberty, truth to nature, reform, and progress, are explored. Neo-classicism as an ongoing impulse in European culture is followed to the early years of the 20th century.
