Subject Description | This subject provides an overview of cultural studies approaches to contemporary popular music. Students will be introduced to the interdisciplinary traditions of scholarship that have emerged in the study of popular music's relationship to its sociocultural contexts. The subject will also provide students with the analytical skills and methodological confidence to undertake small-scale studies of contemporary musical practices and their relationships to wider cultural formations. Topics will include youth subcultures; postmodern sensibilities in rock; Australian musical production; the music industry; contemporary Aboriginal music; world music; and music-video. |
