Subject Description

This subject provides students with a detailed introduction to the forms and methodologies of television studies. In particular, it challenges students to think seriously and critically about television and its place in contemporary culture. It approaches television as a dynamic and complex cultural form that is articulated and experienced across a range of social, historical and textual discourses. Students who successfully complete this subject will have a detailed understanding of the roles and functions of TV in contemporary culture; a knowledge of the social, textual, industrial and economic relations of TV production, broadcast and reception; and a familiarity with the various concepts and methodologies used in television studies and an ability to apply these in their own work.

Assessment

Written work of not more than 5000 words.
