Subject Description

Greece and the Near East, including Egypt, were among the main cultural powers of the ancient world. The subject will explore the impact of the Near East on the shaping of Greek culture in the Bronze and Iron Ages. The relation between Minoan and Near Eastern palaces, the borrowing of the alphabet, comparison between literary works such as the epic of Gilgamesh and the Homeric poems will be some of the central concerns in this exploration of the origins of Hellenism.

Assessment

3,000 words of written work (50%) and a 2-hour examination (or equivalent) (50%).

A reading guide will be made available to the students at the beginning of the semester.
