Subject Description

A history of archaeology from the 18th to the 20th century. The course shows how archaeology developed from its beginnings in Renaissance antiquarianism to assume a major role with the growth of Empire. It analyses the major turning points in the history of archaeology, the introduction of new techniques and the importance of scientific analysis in 20th century archaeology. It assesses the contribution of major figures such as Petrie, Schliemann, Woolley, Evans and Wheeler.

Assessment

An essay of 2500 words (50%); a two hour examination (35%); a slide test (15%).
