Subject Description

The subject covers the history of Corinth, from the Bronze Age to the Roman destruction in 146 B.C. with particular emphasis on the material remains. Major areas of the city and the surrounding territory have been excavated for over 100 years and offer the most evidence for understanding this great Greek city. Among the topics for discussion are the foundation of the polis in the 8th and 7th c, literacy, changes in warfare, the period of tyranny, cults in Corinth and surrounding areas, commercial activity, the Macedonian conquest, the Roman destruction.

Assessment

3000 words of written work (50%) and a 2-hour examination (50%).
