Subject Description

This subject introduces the Classical myths in (especially) Greek, but also Roman culture, with particular reference to their currency in literature and in the material remains. Some of the main concerns dealt with in the subject are Homer's Odyssey, Greek Tragedy, and mythical scenes on Greek vases. The emphasis in the course is on the principal themes and cultural significance of the myths studied, and on some of the major scholarly approaches to the subject matter.

Assessment

Written work of 2000 words (50%) and a 2-hour examination (50%).

Prescribed Texts

The department will issue a reading guide.
