Vision Science and Optics
The Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences provides a series of subjects in visual and optical science for BSc students. The visual science subjects aim to provide students with a thorough knowledge of the eye and visual performance together with an understanding of the physiological processes underlying vision. The subjects in optical science aim to provide an understanding of optical systems and the ability to analyse the performance of optical systems, as well as the ability to develop designs for optical systems to specified performance criteria.
The subjects available to BSc students are:
All the subjects are 12.5 points except 655-222 Physiology of Vision which is 6.25 points.
Optometry
The Department is also responsible for the four year course leading to the degree of Bachelor of Optometry. The full list of subjects in the Bachelor of Optometry course is given on Optometry course. The Department teaches the visual science and clinical optometry subjects of the course. These optometry subjects are not available to BSc students except for 655-101 and 655-210.
However, the BSc visual science and optics course have substantial common content with similar subjects of the B Optom course. BSc students who have completed the BSc subjects in visual and optical science and who are subsequently admitted to the optometry course may obtain credit for the equivalent subjects in the optometry course. Passes in 655-101 and 655-210 give credit for the same subjects in the BOptom course. Passes in 655-221, 655-222, 655-321 and 655-323 give credit for 655-220 Physiological Optics and 655-320 Physiological Optics. Depending on the subjects taken in their course, BSc graduates who obtain a place in the optometry course enter second year of the BOptom course with substantial credit for second year or may enter the third year of the course with credit for the first two years.
