Sociology subject descriptions
First year Sociology subjects are offered by the Department of Political Science in the Faculty of Arts. In 1997 some second and third year subjects are offered by the Faculty of Education. These subjects are designed to cater for all intending teachers, but particularly for those who may intend teaching in areas such as Social Studies and General Studies. The subjects are available to students enrolled in the BEd (Primary), BEd (Secondary) (except Environmental Science) and BSocSc (Info Mgt) courses.
Students specialising in Sociology will normally undertake a three-year sequence of Sociology units. Students completing 33.3 points of second year Sociology are eligible to undertake Teaching Method in Social Studies.
The B-level Sociology offerings include an introductory subject, Researching Social Change, which examines themes, perspectives and issues central to the study of social change. This subject also develops skills in conducting social research. Third year sociology involves the study and use of sociological theory.
You may also enrol in second and third year subjects offered as part of the interdepartmental program offered by the Faculty of Arts, subject to approval by the Education Faculty Office. For subject details see Sociology in the Faculty of Arts section of this Handbook.
