It is a one-year full-time course in which you complete studies in Curriculum, Educational Policy and Management, Information Technology and Language and Literacy in the Classroom, and two Learning Area studies. You also undertake School Experience and Professional Practice.
Most subjects are taught in conjunction with subjects in the Bachelor of Teaching degree.
On completion of the Graduate Diploma in Education course graduates should be able to:
Applicants must have qualified for a degree or a diploma in a recognised university or tertiary institution, and must have completed the requirements for the Learning Area studies intended (see below).
A high degree of proficiency in all aspects of English is desirable for prospective teachers. The course thus makes strong demands on the ability of all students in the four areas of reading, writing, speaking and listening. It is part of the Faculty Assessment Policy that students must show a satisfactory command of all elements of the conventions of written expression, including spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, paragraphing and text structure, to pass in written assignments.
Students may be required to undertake language tests as part of the process of selection. If you have not passed Year 12 English in Australia you will be required to sit the University Test of English as a Second Language (UTESL). The test is used to assess whether applicants have a satisfactory command of the English language, with particular reference to the demands of classroom teaching.
Credit may be awarded for previous study to a maximum of 50 points. Copies of the Faculty's Credit Policy are available from the Faculty Office (phone: 9344 8285).
