The program offers students a means of developing and extending an interest in Russian and former Soviet studies. The program draws on subjects offered by the Departments of Political Science, History and Germanic Studies and Russian.

Russian language study is an integral part of the program.

 1. Prerequisites

Although Russian Language is not compulsory in the first year, it is highly recommended. Those students who wish to enter the program and begin Russian at a later date are strongly recommended to undertake the summer subject 183-103/203/303 Intensive Beginners Russian at the beginning of their second year.

 2. Requirements of a major

A major in Russian Studies requires the completion of at least five semester subjects at second or third-year level (83.3 points), and including Russian language at a minimum of intermediate level.

 3. Entry to Honours

Pure honours in Russian Studies is not available. The prerequisite for entry to Combined Honours in Russian Studies is the completion of all requirements for the BA with a major in Russian Studies (which must include advanced level Russian Language) with an overall average grade of H2A. Students must also meet the requirements for Honours in the combining department.

Apart from Russian language subjects, the following subjects are available for study as part of this program (see individual departmental listings for details).

 4. Opportunities for further study

Further postgraduate study in the area of Russian Studies is available. See Postgraduate Handbook for details of Graduate and Postgraduate Diplomas in Arts (Russian Studies), Master of Arts (Russian Studies). It is also possible to proceed to a PhD in this discipline, enrolling in a PhD in History or Politics, for example.
