    Subject descriptions

The Communication Skills Program offers three credit subjects. They are:

145-130/230 Communication Skills (Spoken Focus)

145-131/231 Communication Skills (Written Focus)

145-134/234 Communication Skills and the Internet

All the subjects cover four areas of communication skills - written, oral, graphic and electronic - with varying degrees of focus on each. For example, Communication Skills (Spoken Focus) concentrates on oral communication skills, with graphic, electronic and, to a lesser extent, written skills being covered as support for oral presentations.

 1. Prerequisites

The subjects are designed primarily for native speakers of English and are open to students from all University faculties (depending on departmental restrictions for faculties outside the Faculty of Arts). Non-native speakers will need a score of at least 7 on the IELTS or UTESL equivalent.

 2. Other information

All subjects are available for first and second year students. Students outside the Arts Faculty wishing to enrol in Communication Skills subjects should contact their home faculty.

Students may take only one of these subjects for credit towards the Arts degree. Arts students wishing to take additional subjects should contact the Arts Faculty Office for further advice.

Students who are taking more than one ESL subject towards their Arts degree are restricted from taking Communication Skills for credit points towards that degree objective.
