Subject descriptions
Chemistry studies the structure of matter; that is, it deals with atoms and molecules, how they react when combined, and identifies the energy changes during chemical reactions. When studied at the University of Melbourne, the role of chemistry in society and the physical environment is also discussed.
The first year Chemistry course covers areas such as atomic structure; the biosphere, geosphere and atmosphere; acids and bases; chemistry of metals; the molecules of life. Teaching involves lectures, tutorials and practical experiments and is complemented by a series of self-paced, interactive, computer aided learning packages.
Chemistry is only offered at first year level for students in the Bachelor of Arts degree.
Students undertaking the Bachelor of Arts are normally permitted to enrol in approved subjects offered by other faculties. However, there is a requirement that students complete a minimum of 50 points at first-year in departments within the Faculty of Arts.
Combined course students will not normally be eligible to enrol in these subjects; please consult with an Arts Faculty Course Adviser for further information.
610-141 and 610-142 require a sound knowledge of Year 12 Chemistry. 610-161 and 610-162 Chemistry is a broader and more descriptive subject stream designed for students who do not have a solid background in the physical sciences and mathematics. Knowledge of Year 12 Chemistry is assumed.
