Subject descriptions
Arabic is the language spoken by the 180 million Arabs living in the Middle East and in Africa, as well as Arabic communities in many countries around the world including Australia. Arabic is also the international language of Islam which is the religion followed by approximately one-fifth of the world's total population. The Department of Language Studies offers several subjects in Arabic language (from Beginners to Advanced levels), literature, Arab society and culture and Islamic Studies.
Graduates of the BA who have majored in Arabic Studies have found employment in teaching, translation, journalism, research and in various areas of the public service, commerce and professions serving the large Arab community in Australia.
Arabic can be taken at beginners, post VCE and more advanced level.
The language stream or level in which a student enrols will be determined by the department. Placement will be based on the students' VCE results, other language study record or a placement test. However, their enrolment will remain provisional until confirmed or, alternatively, altered in the light of new evidence that might emerge during the first weeks of teaching. As far as possible, changes will be notified in the first two weeks of the semester. Changes in weeks 3 and 4 will have to be reported to the Associate Dean.
A major in Arabic Studies requires the completion of five subjects at second and third-year level (a total of 83.3 points) which must normally include Advanced Arabic 1 Part B.
The Department offers a Combined Honours program in Arabic Studies. In order to be eligible for the program a student must complete a major in Arabic Studies and obtain an overall average standard of at least H2B, be eligible for honours in another area of study in the Faculty, and complete all the requirements of the Bachelor of Arts degree.
Normally, students undertaking Combined Honours in Arabic Studies would enrol in Advanced Arabic 2 Part A and B (33.3 points), and, if completing their thesis in Arabic Studies, Arabic Studies Honours thesis (33.3 points) plus coursework in the other area of study (33.3 points). Alternatively, both the thesis and coursework may be undertaken in the other area of study (66.6 points).
Arabic Studies can be continued at Masters and PhD levels.
