250-414 Clinical Sciences 14: Diseases and Preventive Medicine of Horses

Objectives:

Students completing this subject should:

  • be familiar with the nature of the horse industry, routine horse management and the special characteristics of equine veterinary practice;

  • possess the essential information on the more common equine diseases and be able to learn further in this area.

  • be able to initiate a logical equine clinical investigation based on presenting signs and be able to arrive at a reasonable diagnosis and treatment regime; and

  • be able to devise appropriate equine disease prevention programs.

Content:

Aspects of the equine industry - terminology, insurance and purchase examinations; composition of the thoroughbred industry; identification of horses and veterinary roles at equine events; equine stud farm management and breeding; the differential diagnosis of presenting signs; clinical and laboratory investigation of various signs in the horse to arrive at a specific diagnosis; treatment and/or management of the diseases encountered; special considerations for the neonatal foal.

Assessment:

A 3-hour written examination and two 20-minute oral examinations in the examination term of the final clinical year.
