250-301 Clinical Sciences 1

Objectives:

Students completing this subject should:

  • be able to obtain from an animal owner, and record, a comprehensive patient history;

  • be able to make a complete physical examination of a patient and provide a preliminary evaluation of signs in terms of anatomy, physiology and biochemistry;

  • understand the modes of action and the principles underlying use of the major classes of therapeutic drugs;

  • understand the principles of radiography, radiation safety and radiation therapy;

  • understand the principles of anaesthesiology and possess the essential information on anaesthetic agents and routes of administration in the various animal species; and

  • understand and be able to apply principles of surgery.

Content:

History-taking, inspection, routine clinical examination, case-recording, medical record systems. Principles of therapeutics, surgery, anaesthesiology, radiology.

Assessment:

A 3-hour written examination and up to three 20-minute oral examinations on the principles of clinical examination, surgery, anaesthesiology, radiology and therapeutics after the completion of teaching. Without special permission of the Faculty, students must satisfy examiners in Clinical Sciences 1 before proceeding to the study of other clinical sciences subjects.
