654-304 Reproduction and Development

Zoology 654-202 and from 1997, Statistics 619-100 AND AT LEAST ONE OF Cell Biology 606-205 OR 606-206 (Before 1995: 606-203); OR Biochemistry 521-211 and 521-221 (Before 1997: 521-201 and 521-202); or Physiology 536-201 and 536-202 OR Zoology 654-301.

Subject Description:

By the completion of this subject students should:

  • understand neuroendocrine and endocrine control systems and their role in the regulation of reproductive and developmental processes;

  • understand and be able to apply the methods of endocrinology and embryology, including surgery;

  • understand the morphological development of selected species;

  • understand the modern experimental approaches of reproductive physiology and developmental biology.

Topics will include: endocrine glands and hormonal control of growth, mating, pregnancy, parturition and lactation in vertebrates. Neuroendocrine control of reproduction. Human intervention in the reproductive process. Nature and control of embryonic development.

Assessment:

A 3-hour written examination on both theory and practical aspects; laboratory work; three practical reports, of up to eight pages each; a review of up to 3000 words.
