Subject Description:

This unit describes the biological basis to animal behaviour, and covers both the underlying neural mechanisms of animal behaviour and the adaptive significance of complex behaviours. Specific topics include motor, sensory and central nervous systems; foraging, competitive, mating and parental behaviour; learning; communication; and comparative social behaviour. The unit will highlight the ways in which a scientific and evolutionary approach to animal behaviour has developed, and illustrate the strengths and weaknesses of different methods of undertaking research in animal behaviour. Group projects will provide the opportunity to design, execute, analyse and interpret simple observational and experimental studies of animal behaviour.

Assessment:

A 3-hour end-of-semester written examination; up to 3000 words of essay work and/or practical assignments.
