625-496 Earth Sciences Research Project

Prerequisite/s:

Environmental Earth Sciences:
At least 37 points of 300-level Geology subjects, including 625-312 and 625-317.
Geology:
At least 55 points in 300-level Geology including at least two of 625-311, 625-312, 625-313, 625-314, 625-315, 625-316, or 625-317.
Geophysics:
At least 30 points in 300-level Geophysics; greater weight will be given to results in Geophysics subjects in considering applications.
Meteorology:
At least 50 points in 300-level Meteorology, or a Science degree with a major study in the physical or mathematical sciences. It is not necessary to have studied Meteorology as an undergraduate, however, students commencing at the 400-level will be required to undertake appropriate 300-level Meteorology subjects (at an advanced level). Students should discuss their plans with the Head of the Department.

Objectives:

The Honours program in Earth Sciences is designed to:

  • provide an introduction to the process and practice of Earth Science research;

  • enable the acquisition of modern research skills in specific subject areas;

  • encourage the development of the abilities to think critically and independently, to evaluate information, and to analyse various forms of data;

  • improve oral and written communication skills.

Content:

Subject 625-496 comprises:

An original, supervised research project.

Assessment:

Hurdle Requirement:
  • attendance at relevant presentations in the School seminar program and special lectures;

  • oral Presentation - a formal 15 minute presentation late in the year.

Assessed Items:
  • Literature Review - a critical review of relevant literature for the research project. Not to exceed 4000 words and due early in the year. (10% of the total mark for Honours as a whole);

  • Research Report - A written report (thesis) at the end of the year, not exceeding 15,000 words. (70% of the total mark for Honours as a whole).
