625-315 Igneous and Metamorphic Petrogenesis

26 lectures (two a week) and 26 hours practical (two hours a week)

Objectives:

On completion of this subject, students should:

  • see order in the complexity of igneous and metamorphic rock-forming processes;

  • understand the approaches used to delineate the rock-forming processes.

Content:

Topics in igneous and metamorphic petrogenesis, illustrating the consequences of partial melting, assimilation and fractionation processes on the resulting magmas, and the consequences of solid state, fluid and partial melting processes on the resulting metamorphic rocks.

Assessment:

A 3-hour written examination and a 3-hour practical examination or reports totalling up to 3000 words.
