625-221 Geological Methods

26 lectures (two a week), 39 hours practical work (three hours a week)

Objectives:

On completion of this subject, students should have acquired an understanding of the principles and the applications of geological methods relating to the study of, particularly, sedimentary rocks.

Content:

Introductory mineralogy and sedimentary petrology. Principles of stratigraphy, including lithostratigraphy, biostratigraphy and sequence stratigraphy. principles of palaeontology. Interpretation of aerial photographs and digital imagery; use of the electromagnetic spectrum in remote sensing; data acquisition and analysis.

Assessment:

A 2-hour end-of-semester written examination; a 2-hour practical examination or reports totalling up to 1500 words.
