619-497 Statistics Advanced Coursework

Students doing a joint Honours degree with another department should arrange their Statistics workload with the Statistics coordinator.

Objectives:

The Honours program in Statistics is designed to:

  • further the understanding of statistics across a range of theoretical and practical topics;

  • encourage the development of the abilities to think critically and independently;

  • provide an introduction to the process and practice of statistical research;

  • improve oral and written communication skills.

Content:

  • Seven courses chosen from those offered through the Key Centre for Statistical Sciences (KCSS) at La Trobe University, Monash University, RMIT, and the University of Melbourne, subject to departmental approval. Each course consists of 26 hours of lectures presented in one 2-hour session per week during either first or second semester. Full details of these courses are set out in the KCSS booklet which is available from the Statistics Department office from the beginning of October for the following year;

    (In some cases, approval may be given to substitute courses of comparable standard from other areas, such as Mathematics, Economics or Computer Science)

  • a series of (honours) research seminars presented by staff of the department during first semester.

Assessment:

Hurdle Requirements:
  • attendance at no less than 75% of the research seminars;

  • satisfactory completion of assignments relating to the research seminars.

Assessed Items:
  • a 2-hour written examination and assignments, up to a maximum of 50 pages, for each of the (seven) KCSS courses. Examinations are held at the end of each semester. All courses carry equal weight.
