619-201 Probability

Note:

Credit cannot be granted for both 619-201 and 619-101 (619-101 was a subject offered before 1997).

Credit Points:

12.5

Coordinator:

Assoc. Professor R K Watson

Prerequisite/s:

One of 617-141 or 615-160 or 619-100 and one of 618-121 or 618-141. First year students with excellent VCE results may be permitted to take 619-201 at the invitation of the Head of Department.

Timetable:

Semester 1

Contact:

39 lectures (three a week) and 26 tutorial/practice class hours

Objectives:

Students completing this course should:

Comprehend:

  • the fundamental concepts of probability, probability modelling and simulation.

Have developed the skills:

  • to use simple probability models in applications;

  • to carry out standard probability calculations;

  • to use conditioning arguments;

  • to use and calculate probability generating functions;

  • to simulate to approximate probabilities.

Appreciate:

  • the breadth of application of probability;

  • the principles of probability calculation;

  • the application of computer software in probability calculations.

Content:

Simple probability models (Bernoulli trials, Poisson processes, sampling models); use of conditional probability and expectations random variables and descriptions of their probability distributions including hypergeometric, binomial, negative binomial; poisson and normal distributions and some of their applications; probability generating functions and their application to sums of independent random variables; random sums; branching processes; Markov chains; simulation of random variables and processes.

Assessment:

Up to 3 hours end-of-semester written examination; up to 50 pages of assignments may be assessed.
