615-337 Further Concepts in Telecommunications

Two one hour lectures and up to eight hours of project work per week

Objectives:

At the completion of this subject, students should:

  • have knowledge of the different topologies and transmission media commonly used in local area networks and the different types of wide area networks;

  • appreciate the function of various network-dependent protocols used with local and wide area networks, and have in-depth knowledge of key aspects of these protocols;

  • understand the operation of transport protocols, application support protocols, and application-specific protocols used in network services.

Content:

Aspects of the following topics will be considered: data transmission basics; network connectivity and performance issues; TCP/IP and OSI protocols for open systems.

Assessment:

End of semester written examination of up to three hours; group and individual project work. Weighting of the assessment components will be announced at the commencement of the subject.
