615-330 Advanced Concepts in Database

Two one hour lectures and up to eight hours of project work per week

Objectives:

At the completion of this subject, students should:

  • have an in-depth knowledge of the relational database model and be able to write relational database schema;

  • have a working knowledge of some non-relational database models;

  • be able to write efficient database queries in Structured Query Language (SQL).

Content:

Aspects of the following topics will be considered: data models, focusing on relational but including network, hierarchical, and possibly others; relational database issues (normalisation, query processing, and optimisation); object-oriented databases (design and query languages).

Assessment:

End of semester written examination of up to three hours; group and individual project work. Weighting of the assessment components will be announced at the commencement of the subject.
