615-247 Human Computer Interfaces

Students enrolled in the single BSc or a combined BSc course will receive Science credit for the completion of this subject.

Contact:

One two hour lectures and up to eight hours of project work per week

Objectives:

At the completion of this subject, students should:

  • have knowledge of the technical, cognitive, and social factors that can make interactive software effective or ineffective;

  • have experience using several information exploration tools and user interface development environments;

  • be aware of the range of design principles and guidelines that can assist user interface designers, and understand the limitations of such guidelines;

  • understand the advantages and disadvantages of usability testing and various approaches to measuring usability.

Content:

Aspects of the following topics will be considered: conceptual theories; user characteristics; user modelling; types of human-computer dialogues - menu driven dialogues, Graphical User Interfaces (GUIS); user input design; development environments; usability measurements and testing; other issues in HCI.

Assessment:

End of semester written examination of up to three hours; individual and group project work. Weighting of the assessment components will be announced at the commencement of the course.
